What the numbers really mean
Xining, where almost every Qinghai trip begins, sits at about 2,200 m, while Qinghai Lake and Chaka are higher at roughly 3,100 to 3,200 m. Those figures sound daunting, but they are well within the range that most healthy travellers handle without trouble. The plateau is not a wall you must climb in one leap; it is a gradual slope, and how you pace the climb matters far more than the raw altitude.
In practice, the most common complaints are a mild headache, a light-headed feeling on the first afternoon, or a restless first night. These usually ease within a day or two as the body adapts.
How we build the days
Our approach is simple: go up slowly and let the guest set the pace. The first two days stay low and gentle, with short walks and long drives rather than strenuous sightseeing. Only from the third day do we move toward the highest viewpoints. The vehicle always carries oxygen, and nothing on the schedule is fixed so tightly that it cannot be shortened.
- Day one and two — low altitude, light activity, early nights
- Day three onward — higher lakes and passes, still unhurried
- Throughout — oxygen in the vehicle and frequent water breaks
Who should check with a doctor first
If you have heart problems, high blood pressure or a serious respiratory condition, please speak to your doctor before booking, and tell us at the planning stage. We can adjust the route, keep the altitude lower, or slow the ascent further. Guests who have reacted badly at altitude before should mention it too, because there is usually a gentler version of the same trip.
If at any point you feel a persistent headache, nausea or shortness of breath, tell your guide straight away. We would far rather shorten a day or arrange a clinic visit than push on regardless.
