Why the season sets the whole trip
Qinghai sits on the Tibetan Plateau, so its travel year is short and sharply defined. From November through March the province is cold and largely closed to comfortable touring, then it opens up quickly once the grass returns. That means most of the decisions you make about a Qinghai trip, from which lake you see to how crowded the shoreline feels, come down to one thing: which month you choose.
Because the window is narrow, dates fill up fast. Hotels around Qinghai Lake and drivers in Xining are booked well in advance for the peak weeks, so the earlier you settle on a month, the more choice you keep.
What June, July and September actually feel like
July is the month people picture: the rapeseed fields around Qinghai Lake turn gold and the whole basin looks postcard-perfect. It is also the busiest stretch of the year, with the highest room rates and the longest queues at the main viewpoints. June arrives just before that rush, with the flowers starting, the weather stable and the roads noticeably calmer. September, after the crowds leave but before the cold sets in, is the month most of our guests enjoy most, thanks to clear light and quiet lakeshores.

What to watch out for
Altitude matters as much as weather here. Even in midsummer the lake sits above 3,000 m and the first night can be restless, so we always build a gentler opening into the itinerary before you go higher.
If your holiday can only fall in July or August, that is still a wonderful time to come. We simply loosen the daily pace, avoid the midday crush at the popular stops, and lock in accommodation and vehicles early so nothing is left to chance.
