Will Jiuzhaigou cause altitude sickness?

Jiuzhaigou sits between 2,000 and 3,100 m, far lower than Qinghai, and most guests feel nothing at all. Huanglong is higher at about 3,500 m, so we take the cable car up and walk down slowly, giving your body time to adjust. We still carry oxygen in the vehicle as a precaution.

Lower than you might expect

Jiuzhaigou sits between roughly 2,000 and 3,100 m, which is considerably lower than Qinghai or Tibet. For most guests this means no noticeable effect at all: you walk the valleys, enjoy the lakes and waterfalls, and never think about the altitude. A small number of people feel a mild headache or sleep a little lightly on the first night, and that passes quickly.

Huanglong, the neighbouring reserve, is the higher of the two at around 3,500 m, and that is where a little care pays off.

How we handle Huanglong

Rather than walking up, we take the cable car to the top and walk down slowly. Climbing is what usually causes discomfort, so removing the climb removes most of the problem. Oxygen is kept in the vehicle as a precaution, and your guide checks in on how you are feeling through the day.

  • Cable car up and a gentle walk down at Huanglong
  • Oxygen carried in the vehicle throughout
  • A relaxed pace with time to sit and rest
  • A guide ready to adjust the day if anyone feels unwell

Because the pace matters more than the destination here, we set each day around the group in front of us rather than a fixed schedule. The driver and the guide are two separate people, so while the vehicle waits, your guide walks at your speed and can turn back early if anyone has had enough. If the weather or how you feel suggests a change, your consultant amends the plan the same day; nothing on this route is so rigid that it cannot move.

What to watch out for

If anyone in your group has a heart, blood-pressure or respiratory condition, have them speak to a doctor before booking and tell us at the planning stage. Guests who have reacted badly at altitude before should mention it too; we can swap Huanglong for a lower alternative, or spread the days out so the ascent is gentler.

During the trip, if you feel dizzy, headachy or short of breath, say so immediately. A quick word with the guide is all it takes to change the rhythm, and that is exactly what we are there for.
