Is Gansu very hot and dry?

Summer days can reach 30-35°C along the corridor, but the air is dry and often breezy, which feels easier than the humid heat of southern China. We plan outdoor sights for the morning and late afternoon and rest indoors at midday. Bring plenty of water, lip balm and sunscreen, plus a light layer for cool evenings.

Hot days, dry air

Summer in Gansu is genuinely hot on paper: the corridor often reaches the low thirties Celsius and Dunhuang can climb higher. What surprises first-time visitors is how comfortable that feels compared with the humidity of southern China or Hong Kong. Dry air and a steady breeze mean you sweat less, cool down faster in shade, and find the evenings genuinely pleasant.

The key is not avoiding the heat entirely but arranging the day around it. Morning and late afternoon are for being outdoors; the middle of the day is for rest.

How we arrange the days

On a Gansu itinerary we front-load the sights. Mornings and evenings are when we take you to the big outdoor stops, with a break back at the hotel around midday. The vehicle always carries plenty of drinking water, and we build in unhurried afternoons so the pace never feels like a forced march.

  • Outdoor sights in the morning and late afternoon
  • Midday rest back at the hotel
  • Water kept in the vehicle all day
  • Light long sleeves for large day-night temperature swings

What to pack and what to watch out for

Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and lip balm are not optional here. Bring them and use them. The desert nights are cool even in summer, so a thin jacket or long-sleeved shirt is worth having within reach. If your skin dries out easily, pack moisturiser as well.

Eating is easy: we can choose restaurants that keep dishes light and not too spicy, and there is usually room for extra soup, fruit and fluids. Guests with dry skin or sensitive eyes should simply plan for it, and it rarely spoils the trip.
