Why Kanas has two seasons, not one
Kanas is really two different trips depending on the month. In summer, from June to August, the valley is deep green and cool, a genuine escape from the heat of the lowlands. Then, for a few weeks in autumn, the birches and larches turn gold and the whole reserve changes character. The autumn colour is what Kanas is famous for, and it is also when everyone wants to be there.
The turning point is not a fixed date. It shifts a little each year with temperature, so advice read in a guidebook six months early is only an estimate.
Picking your dates
Our usual suggestion is to aim for roughly mid-September to early October, then confirm once we can see how the season is shaping up. If you would rather trade the peak colour for quiet, early September and the first half of October are calmer, with far fewer people at the viewpoints and easier access to hotels and vehicles.
- June to August — cool and green, ideal for escaping the heat
- Mid-September to early October — the famous golden autumn, and the busiest
- Early September or late October — quieter shoulders around the peak
- National Day week — expect the heaviest demand, so book well ahead
What to watch out for
Around the National Day holiday, accommodation and vehicles in the reserve become very tight, so those dates need to be locked in early. The other thing to guard against is treating the colour change as guaranteed on a particular day; it is a natural event and we plan around it, not against it.
We usually offer two or three candidate dates based on your holiday and our colour forecast, then compare flights, hotels and expected visitor numbers so the choice stays yours.
