Why the two provinces fit together
Qinghai and Gansu share a border and, more usefully, they share a landscape story. Put them together and a single trip moves through alpine lakes, salt flats, rainbow-coloured rock, desert and painted caves, with the scenery changing completely every day or two. That variety is exactly why the combined circuit has become our most requested route.
Travelling the pair also solves a practical problem. Qinghai on its own is fairly compact and Gansu on its own involves a long corridor of driving. Joined into one loop, the distances balance out and no single stretch feels like wasted time.
How the classic circuit runs
The usual shape is eight to ten days, though we trim or extend it to suit your holiday. You start in Xining, follow Qinghai Lake and Chaka into the plateau, then cross into Gansu for Zhangye, Jiayuguan and finally Dunhuang, flying out from there. The whole route runs by private vehicle, so you are never sharing with strangers.
- 8-10 days is the natural length
- Start Xining, finish Dunhuang, or run it the other way
- High-speed rail links Lanzhou and Xining if you prefer to fly one leg
- Short on time? We can cut it to one province and rebalance the days
What to watch out for
The main trap is trying to fit too much in. The circuit covers real distance, and cramming it into six or seven days turns a holiday into a schedule. We would rather drop one stop than spend the trip in the car. The second thing is direction: running Xining to Dunhuang or Dunhuang to Xining changes flight prices and comfort, so we compare both before committing.
Altitude on this loop is gentle compared with Tibet, but the plateau section still deserves a slow first couple of days.
