Why the Mogao Caves need planning
The Mogao Caves operate under a strict real-name reservation system, and the number of visitors allowed in each day is capped. In peak periods such as July, August and the National Day holiday, standard tickets routinely sell out about a month ahead. This is not a case of turning up and buying at the gate; the earlier your dates are fixed, the better your chance of seeing the caves the way you imagined.
It is worth understanding the two kinds of ticket before you book, because they are not the same experience.
Standard tickets and emergency tickets
A standard ticket lets you see a set number of caves with a dedicated guide, and it is what most travellers have in mind. When the standard allocation is gone, an emergency ticket is the alternative: it gives access to a smaller selection of caves and a different style of commentary. Neither is better in a moral sense; they are simply different, and we explain both so you can decide.
