The distances are real
Xinjiang is enormous, and the distances surprise almost everyone. Urumqi to Kanas is close to 700 km in each direction, and covering that entirely by road would eat into the days you came to enjoy. Our answer is to fly. Using domestic flights for the long legs puts your time back into the scenery, leaving the ground sections for the parts worth driving slowly.
This is also why we favour a private car over a group coach. With your own vehicle the itinerary stays flexible: you can stop for a view, change the order of the day, or linger somewhere that turns out to be special.
How the ground sections work
Within the reserve, Kanas, Hemu and Baihaba are linked by scenic shuttle buses and park vehicles, and we plan the sequence around how busy each area is that day. Staying flexible here matters, because the best light and the quietest paths are rarely available at the same time for every spot.
- Domestic flights for the long regional legs
- A private car, never shared with strangers
- Scenic shuttle buses inside the Kanas reserve
- An option to add a day and stay two nights at Hemu for mist and stars
What to watch out for
Domestic flight baggage allowances and departure times shape how the days are built, so we work backwards from your flights when we set the park tickets and hotels. That avoids the classic mistake of trying to squeeze too much into a travel day and spending it in transit.
If you would like a slower rhythm overall, tell us early. Adding a night somewhere in the middle usually improves the trip more than adding another sight.
