Two strong seasons, two very different trips
Jiuzhaigou looks its best twice a year, and the two versions do not feel alike. Spring and early summer bring fresh green growth and generous water, so the waterfalls run full and the lakes glow. Autumn paints the forest in gold and red, and the reflections in the water are the reason the reserve appears on so many wish lists.
There is no single right answer. It depends entirely on what you would rather see.
What to expect month by month
April to June offers new foliage and healthy water levels with moderate crowds. September and October deliver the famous colour but also the greatest number of visitors. Winter is a different experience altogether: very few people, a snow-dusted landscape, and the odd icy patch to watch for on the paths.
- April to June — fresh green, full waterfalls, moderate crowds
- September to October — the best autumn colour, busiest period
- July and August — rainy, still perfectly visitable with rain gear
- Winter — quiet and snowy, with some paths possibly icy
What to watch out for
In peak season, tickets and hotels at Jiuzhaigou are in high demand, so we book them the moment your itinerary is confirmed. If you would rather avoid the crowds, June and the second half of October are good compromises, still attractive but noticeably calmer.
Whichever season you pick, bring rain protection and shoes with decent grip. Even in the dry months a short shower is possible, and the wooden walkways can be slick.
