Choosing where to go

Is Longji worth visiting?

It is, but the timing shapes the experience. May, when the terraces are flooded and mirror the sky, and September, when the rice ripens, are the most spectacular; winter is quiet and bare. The drive is about three hours, so we usually suggest staying a night in the villages rather than rushing back.

Worth it, but the calendar matters

Longji is one of those places where the season is not a detail, it is the whole experience. In May the terraces are flooded and catch the sky like a set of mirrors. In September the rice turns and the slopes run gold. Those two windows are the ones people photograph, and they are genuinely the best.

Winter is quiet and pared back, with the bare lines of the terraces still pleasing to look at, and far fewer visitors. If your dates land outside the two peak windows, the visit is still worthwhile, just different.

The drive is part of the story

The terraces sit about three hours by road from central Guilin, on winding mountain roads. We usually suggest staying at least one night up in the villages rather than driving up and back in a single day, because the best light falls at dawn and dusk, exactly when a day trip would have you heading home.

Where you stay shapes the trip. We look for guesthouses in the Ping'an or Dazhai area with good views, and we decide which walking trails suit your group once we know how much climbing you want.

What the accommodation is like

  • Village guesthouses rather than city hotels, so rooms are simpler.
  • We choose places with private bathrooms and hot water.
  • A light jacket is worth packing; the hills are cooler than Guilin.
  • If time is short, the viewpoints near the guesthouse are enough on their own.

A common misunderstanding

Guests sometimes plan Longji as a half-day stop between Guilin and Yangshuo. It does not work well like that: the road time is significant, and rushing the villages removes the reason to go. Better to give it a night and let the light do its work.

When to just ask us

Tell us your dates and how much walking you want, and we will match the season, pick the village and reserve a guesthouse with a view worth waking up for. If your dates are fixed, we will be honest about what the terraces will look like when you are there.

Still unsure? Just ask.
