AlipayHK on the mainland
AlipayHK can be linked to a card issued in Hong Kong and used for everyday spending on the mainland. For most small shops, taxis and attraction ticket machines it does the job well, which means you rarely need to carry much cash.
Payment habits on the mainland lean heavily on mobile apps, and a visitor without one can feel oddly stuck. Setting up AlipayHK before you arrive is a small piece of preparation that saves a good deal of fiddling at counters.
Have a backup ready
It is worth setting up WeChat Pay as well, because a few merchants accept only one of the two systems. Having both linked to a Hong Kong card means a payment that fails in one app can usually be completed in the other without a detour to a cash machine.
- Link AlipayHK to a card issued in Hong Kong.
- Set up WeChat Pay as a second option.
- Check the app works before you travel.
- Keep a little cash for the rare place that takes none of them.
What is priced in renminbi
Hotel bills, attraction tickets and the costs included in our itinerary are priced in renminbi. When you pay with a Hong Kong card, the exchange rate and any cross-border fee are set by your issuing bank, so the amount that leaves your account may differ slightly from the renminbi figure.
What is already covered
The vehicle, the driver and the guide are included in your quoted price, so your own spending is mainly personal. If a payment runs into a limit or is declined, message your consultant on WhatsApp and we will help you use another method.
