Why timing matters

A Tibet permit usually takes ten to fifteen working days, and longer in the peak season or around public festivals, so we suggest applying as soon as the itinerary is fixed rather than leaving it until just before departure. If the timing is too tight, a request for extra documents or a holiday closure can put your departure at risk.

There is another crucial point: the application needs confirmed entry and exit dates, cities and a route. Once the documents are submitted, the itinerary should not change substantially, so settling the plan first and applying afterwards saves a great deal of re-filing.

Even if your holiday dates are not final, tell us the rough window and we will advise how far ahead the application should go in, giving you enough time to sort documents and flights.

How the application runs

The application requires document details for every traveller and confirmed entry and exit dates, cities and route. Travellers from Taiwan and other countries must apply through a travel agency and travel with a guide inside Tibet. Once it is approved we hand you the relevant papers and confirm everything once more at the pre-departure briefing.

  • Document details: each traveller's papers, matching the person exactly.
  • Trip information: entry and exit dates, cities and route must be settled.
  • Timing: apply the moment the plan is fixed, and earlier still in peak season.
  • Before departure: we hand over the documents and check them at the briefing.

What to watch out for

Please keep your phone reachable while the application is in progress, so that if the authorities need more documents we can reach you at once. If you change your dates or route after submitting, the application may have to be filed again and the processing time restarts.

Hong Kong residents travelling on a Home Return Permit do not need a Tibet permit but still need a real-name registration and an agency to receive them. If your party includes travellers from Taiwan or other countries, the two types of document are handled on different timelines, and we will explain them separately.
