Can I go outside summer?

Yes, and it is worthwhile. Xining and Kumbum Monastery stay open all year, and in winter the lake freezes over, which is a sight in itself. From November to March temperatures are low and the wind is sharp, so bring proper winter clothing.

What stays open and what changes

Xining and Kumbum Monastery are open all year, so the cultural side of the trip does not depend on the season. The lake is the element that changes most: in winter its surface freezes, and the ice against the surrounding snow forms a landscape quite unlike the summer version, with far fewer visitors around.

Winter on the plateau

Between November and March the temperatures are low and the wind across the open ground is sharp, so proper winter clothing is essential rather than optional. Some sections of road can be affected by snow or ice, which is why we build a little flexibility into the plan and watch the conditions as the date approaches.

  • Pack real winter layers, not just a summer jacket
  • Expect wind, which makes the cold feel sharper
  • Allow for the possibility of a route adjustment
  • Enjoy the quiet, since winter crowds are minimal

The shoulder seasons as a compromise

If you would rather avoid both the summer crowds and the deep winter cold, spring and autumn tend to sit in the middle. The weather is often stable, the sights are far from crowded, and the light is soft, which suits photography and unhurried travel.

These in-between months are also a good time for guests who want the classic scenery without the peak-season pressure on hotels and tickets.

How we plan an off-season trip

Outside summer we build the same route around shorter daylight and colder ground. Driving is kept to the middle of the day where we can, the schedule leaves room for a later start if snow has to be cleared, and we choose hotels with reliable heating so the evenings stay comfortable. The plan is confirmed with you item by item before departure, so the cold-weather arrangement is clear well in advance.

It also pays to layer rather than over-pack. A warm base layer, a windproof outer layer and gloves do more for a cold plateau day than one heavy coat, and they are easier to shed as the temperature changes between the town and the open ground.

When to just ask us

Tell us the month you are considering and whether you are more worried about cold or about crowds, and we will advise on what to pack and which parts of the route may need adjusting for that time of year.
