Why this matters

Kanas offers two completely different trips in the same year, and which one you get depends entirely on your dates. In summer the forests are deep green and the weather is cool and fresh, which makes the area an easy escape from the heat of the lower valleys. In autumn the birches turn gold, the most photographed version of the landscape, and visitor numbers rise sharply with it.

Because the two seasons feel so unlike each other, the first question to settle is what you actually want to see, not simply which dates are convenient.

How it works in practice

June to August is a green summer, pleasant for walking and general sightseeing. Mid-September to early October produces the golden autumn colour, and we usually suggest aiming for roughly 15 September to 5 October. The precise turning of the leaves follows temperature, so a cold year brings it forward and a mild one delays it.

  • June to August: green summer, cooler and quieter.
  • Mid-September to early October: golden birch autumn.
  • Colour timing shifts each year with temperature.
  • Peak autumn is also the busiest and most expensive period.

What to watch out for

The autumn window coincides with the busiest travel period of the year, and hotels and transport in the area come under real pressure. A late booking in those weeks may mean limited choice, higher rates or a different room than you would prefer. If autumn colour is the goal, planning ahead is not optional.

It is also worth keeping a little slack in your dates. Because the colour peak moves by several days from year to year, a rigid schedule can miss the best of it. Staying flexible around a mid-September to early-October core gives you the best chance.
