Choosing where to go

Badaling or Mutianyu?

We recommend Mutianyu: it has fewer people, is better preserved, and offers a cable car and a toboggan, about 2.5 hours each way. Badaling is the more famous section but is often extremely crowded, with more than an hour of queuing in peak season.

Two very different days on the wall

Both sections are genuine, well-preserved stretches of the Great Wall, but they feel quite different once you are standing on them. Mutianyu is the one we recommend most often, and the reason is simple: fewer people and an easier day.

Badaling carries the fame. It is the section most visitors have heard of, it is easy to reach, and the walls are impressive. It is also extremely busy, and in peak season queuing becomes a genuine part of the experience.

How the two compare

  • Mutianyu: quieter, beautifully preserved, with a cable car and a toboggan for the descent
  • Mutianyu: roughly two and a half hours each way, which suits families and older guests
  • Badaling: the most famous section, more crowded, with longer waits in the busy months
  • Either way: a private vehicle that never carries strangers, and guides matched to your group

For a first visit with limited time, Mutianyu usually wins on comfort and photographs. If walking the famous stretch is the point of your trip, Badaling still delivers, and an early start avoids the worst of the crowds.

What to watch out for

Whichever you choose, the wall is steep in places and the steps vary in height, so sensible shoes matter more than anything else. Weather changes the experience too, from bright clear views to thick cloud.

Crowd levels and lift operations vary through the year, so we check conditions and adjust the departure time rather than promising a fixed schedule.
