Is this good for young children?

Very good, and it is our most requested family itinerary. The altitude is moderate, the vehicles are air-conditioned and there are plenty of rest stops, so the days never feel too long. The panda base and Dujiangyan are usually the highlights for children.

Why families choose this route

Sichuan is one of the gentlest ways to introduce a young family to western China. The days are not built around long hikes; they are built around a handful of big, colourful experiences that children actually remember. The panda base in Chengdu is the obvious one, and Dujiangyan, with its ancient irrigation works and swinging bridges, tends to surprise parents as much as it delights children.

Altitude stays modest through most of the route, and because the vehicle is private a tired child can nap between stops instead of sitting up on a crowded coach. That alone removes much of the friction that makes family travel hard.

How the days are built around children

We treat the itinerary as a starting point rather than a fixed schedule. When you tell us the ages of the children travelling, we adjust how long we stay at each sight, where we break for food and how early the day begins.

  • Shorter walking sections and frequent rest stops, with the option to skip a viewpoint altogether
  • A private vehicle that never carries strangers, so toilet breaks and nap time are never a problem
  • The driver and the guide are two different people, which means someone is always free to help with the children
  • Meals timed earlier than usual, with dishes chosen to suit younger palates

What to watch out for

The main caution is pacing rather than difficulty. It is easy to over-plan because everything looks close on a map, and the drive up into the mountains is longer than most families expect. We usually suggest keeping one day deliberately light, especially at the start.

Huanglong sits higher than Jiuzhaigou, so if a child is prone to feeling unwell we take the cable car up and walk down slowly, and we never rush the descent.

When to just ask us

Tell us your travel dates, how many adults and children are coming, and the ages involved. We will come back with a specific route and quote rather than a vague suggestion, and we can flag which days will feel longest.

There is no charge for the initial consultation or the draft itinerary. The same consultant stays with you on WhatsApp from the first message to the last day of the trip.
