Why this matters
The Qilian grasslands sit at around 2,800 metres, and altitude changes how the weather feels as much as the temperature itself. Daytime summer figures look mild and comfortable, but the gap between a sunny afternoon and a clear early morning is wide, and it catches out travellers who pack for a warm-weather trip.
Add steady wind across open ground and the air can feel several degrees cooler than the thermometer suggests. This matters most at the two times of day people most enjoy being outdoors: sunrise and the long, golden evenings.
How it works in practice
We advise layers rather than a single heavy coat. A breathable base layer, a light fleece and a windproof shell cover almost every condition you will meet, and you can add or remove them through the day. A jacket genuinely belongs in your day bag even in July.
- Summer daytime roughly 18-24°C.
- Early mornings and evenings can fall to 5-10°C.
- Wind makes it feel colder than the reading.
- UV is strong at this altitude, so cover up and use sunscreen.
What to watch out for
Strong ultraviolet is the single most underrated hazard on the plateau. You can burn on a cool, cloudy day without noticing, and the effect builds over several days on the road. A hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen are practical necessities rather than luxuries, and lips and the back of the neck are easy to forget.
Cold sensitivity is individual, so the same conditions can feel fine to one traveller and genuinely uncomfortable to another. If anyone in your group feels the cold easily, mention it and we will choose accommodation and timings with warmth and rest in mind.
When to just ask us
Tell us the month you are travelling and who is coming, and we will give you a packing list tuned to your route rather than generic advice. The grassland can be glorious in the right clothing and miserable in the wrong kit, and that difference is entirely within your control.
