How the reservation system works
The Mogao Caves use a real-name reservation system, and in peak season the standard tickets often sell out about a month in advance. July, August and the National Day holiday are the tightest of all, and the most popular time slots go first. This is not a site where you can simply turn up and expect to walk in.
We reserve the standard caves for you as soon as your itinerary is confirmed, and we prepare for the release dates well ahead rather than leaving it until the last moment.
If the standard caves are already full
When the standard tickets have gone, the usual alternative is the emergency caves. If that happens we tell you straight away and explain how the two differ, so you can decide whether to keep the date or shift it. What we do not do is quietly substitute one for the other.
How to protect your dates
If seeing the standard caves matters to you, the surest protection is to fix your dates early and let us book as soon as the itinerary is set. Reservation rules and opening arrangements can change, so please check the latest official notice before you travel, and we will keep you posted on anything that affects your booking.
It also helps to arrive with a day or two of slack around Dunhuang rather than a single fixed slot. If the cave tickets you wanted are tight on one date, a little flexibility lets us move that one day and keep the rest of the trip exactly as planned.
There is one more detail worth knowing: the reservation is tied to a named traveller and a chosen time slot, so changes to a name or a date after booking are not always straightforward. Keeping the passport or permit details you book with unchanged, and telling us early if anything shifts, avoids losing a slot you waited for.
Your consultant confirms the cave day as soon as it is secured and keeps you updated if the release timing moves, so you are never left wondering whether it is in hand.
When to just ask us
If the caves are the reason for your trip, tell us as soon as you have dates in mind. The earlier we can work, the better your chance of the standard cave experience rather than the fallback.
