The short answer
If you want our recommendation without the detail, it is Mutianyu. The crowds are lighter, the stonework is better preserved, and there is both a cable car and a toboggan to spare your legs. The round trip from central Beijing runs to roughly two and a half hours, which leaves the day unhurried rather than squeezed.
Badaling remains the more famous section, and it is genuinely convenient. The trade-off is popularity: in peak season the queues can run past an hour, and both the paths and the photo spots feel congested.
Badaling: fame and convenience
Badaling suits travellers who value the name and the shorter journey, and who are happy to share the experience with a great many others. For a first visit with no strong feelings either way, it does the job.
Mutianyu: calmer and better preserved
- Fewer visitors, so the wall feels like a place rather than a queue.
- The restored stonework is in excellent condition.
- A cable car up and a toboggan down make it easier on the knees.
- Gentler gradients, which suits families and older guests.
What we suggest for families
With older parents or young children, Mutianyu's gentler slopes make a real difference, and the toboggan often becomes the highlight of the day for the youngest travellers. We arrange a private car for either section and time the visit to avoid the mid-morning group wave.
Before you climb, we remind you to wear proper shoes, carry enough water, use sun protection in summer and bring a windproof layer in winter. The wall is exposed in every season.
When to just ask us
Tell us your preference and the make-up of your group and we will pick the section, set the timing and arrange the car. If the weather turns, we can switch plans on the day, since you are travelling privately and not tied to a coach schedule.
