The two comfortable windows

April to June and September to November are the months we recommend most often. Temperatures are mild, and mist drifts between the sandstone pillars, which gives the landscape the layered, almost painted quality it is known for.

Spring brings fresh green and occasional showers, while autumn is drier and clearer, with the added colour of turning leaves.

Summer and winter

  • July and August: hot and busy, with school holidays adding to the queues at the popular lifts and cable cars
  • December to February: snow and rime on the peaks, spectacular but cold, and some cable cars may pause if ice builds up
  • Shoulder days either side of the peak seasons: fewer people and more room to enjoy the viewpoints

If you want winter photographs, the snow-covered pillars are genuinely memorable. We simply confirm whether the lifts and roads are running before committing to that plan.

What to watch out for

Summer heat is best handled by starting early and resting through the middle of the day, which is also when the crowds are thickest. In winter the cold is the issue, and layers matter more than any single heavy coat.

Because mountain weather changes quickly, we treat the season as a guide rather than a guarantee and adjust the daily order when conditions suggest it.

Packing for the season you choose

The one constant across the year is changeable mountain weather, so layers work better than a single heavy coat. A light waterproof shell, comfortable non-slip shoes and something warm for the early starts cover almost every month, while in summer a hat and plenty of water matter more than anything else.

If mist is likely we adjust the order of the day rather than cancel it, moving the high viewpoints to the clearest hours and leaving the valley for later. Tell us what you are hoping to see and we will build the schedule around the conditions as far as the weather allows.

When to just ask us

Tell us the month you have in mind and we will tell you what to expect, what to pack and how early to start each day. There is no charge for the consultation or the draft itinerary.

The same consultant looks after your trip throughout and can be reached on WhatsApp for any last-minute question about clothing or timing.
